Health Tips (Part 2): Obesity and Asthma

Obesity describes someone who is overweight.

Obesity is becoming very common in the UK; and it is estimated that 1 in every 4 adults and 1 in every 5 children between the ages of 10-11 will be affected. {1}

Being over weight can lead to serious and sometimes life- threatening illness such as stroke, type 2 diabetes, heart problems or asthma.

 

If someone is overweight, losing some weight can help with their health. It is not fully understood by scientists the link between being overweight and asthma, but possible reasons are, reduced fitness levels, general inflammation of the body, and extra weight around the chest area causing increased breathlessness. {2}

 Weight Loss

Losing weight helps with the symptoms of asthma.  However as most people know, losing weight is not always that simple, and then throwing exercise into the mix makes it quite challenging for someone with Asthma. {3}

There is no quick fix to loosing weight. The idea is to take your time and lose weight slowly, that way you are more likely to keep the weight off. Reduce your calorie intake, eat a healthy balanced diet and drink water to help curb those hunger pains.

Speak to your GP or Practice Nurse about a reducing diet; they will be able to give you advice, support you though the process and monitor your weight.
